Sanctuary
Welcome to the home and heartbeat of Barefoot Yoga School where people come to study, rest and immerse. A conscious expansion into our very own space which has been intentionally put together.

Eco friendly build
Imperfect sustainabiltiy was a concept introduced to us by a friend. The idea that we can be more concious and considered even if it's not perfect. Every stone was lovingly selected for its natural beauty and colour. Each piece of wood including the windows and doorframes are either antique, reclaimed or recycled for this build and all roof tiles were second hand. With minimal new construction materials used.

Nature first
For this wonder to become a reality, we refused to destroy nature to make way for development. Pest trees have been incorporated into the landscape as boardwalks that now help to protect the natural habitats and forest floors. Whilst all other trees have been kept and preserved and even feature in some of the buildings! We have literally built around nature! So it was all off the plan, as nature provided the blueprints for us.

Heritage over modern minimalism
The vision may have been ours, but the project has been lovingly created and put together by a team of local craftsmen. As we call Sri Lanka home, we have embraced the colourful, fruitful and ritualistic way of island life. It influences our design choices and steers us away from modern minimalism. We are harmonising with the culture and rich history of this island.
Our
Story
From where we came to where we're going
This project of building a Yoga school has been ongoing for the past 7 years. Originating in Byron Bay, Australia and expanding to Sri Lanka in 2023. Our long held vision has been to provide a down to earth space for passionate people who love or are interested in learning more about themselves through the lens of Yogic practices and lifestyle. Organically grown, lovingly nurtured and now we offer our own space to those who wish to study, immerse or reconnect with nature in a down to earth way, in a non judgemental environment which can feel scarce in the Yoga world at times.

With galleried library and entrance way.

The Dhyana Studio
Dhyana Studio offers the perfect combination of calmness and serenity away from the tropical elements. For those wanting to go inwards and withdraw their senses. This space has been specifically designed for internal practices such as Meditation, Yin Yoga, Pranayama, Sound healing and introspection. With special plants that produce higher than average amounts of 02, salt lamps and AC.

Water features & pool
The 7x4m swimming pool is filled with natural underground spring water and kept clean with a light dose of chlorine. It is accompanied by natural lotus ponds which surround the main living areas. They bring nature closer, providing the native birds with clean drinking and bathing water, a habitat for water loving creatures such as dragonflies and beautiful fish. Helping to share our space with the surrounding nature and provide natural cooling systems and inspiring beauty.

Gardens & Forestry/Jungle
We have preserved the forested jungle area by protecting all of the trees during the build. We have an abundance of native trees such as: Kotuumba (almond), mango, jackfruit, coconut, soursop and Donga amongst others. Some with exposed aeriel roots, giving the landscape shape and structure. The forest floor is kept natural and largely undisturbed by a boardwalk which hovers above.

Living & lounging spaces
We have appointed a dedicated reception area, adjoined to the shop and downstairs shared WC. In addition to this we have stunning paddy front lounge with lotus ponds, comfortable seating and coffee table for those deep and meaningful conversations to take place, or a nice spot to read a book in a nook.

We have a commercial kitchen for our chef and staff members alongside a kitchenette in the main living space designed for retreat participants to have basic facilities for making tea etc.
