Our Space

Nature provided the blueprint

This space is a unique blend of nature, antiquity and island living. We went completely 'off the plan' as we worked around the natural features, not a single tree was cut down for this project. Working around nature was all part of the creative process. From our co founders sketch book, to a reality. We have enjoyed working closely with our local village craftsmen, to build a space that respects, embraces and honours the rich history, heritage and nature of Sri Lanka whilst making a home that we know our community will love.

Eco friendly build

Imperfect sustainabiltiy. The idea that we can be more conscious and considered even if it's not perfect. Every stone, door and window was lovingly hand picked for its natural beauty, texture and story telling ability. We have used natural, reclaimed, recycled and antique materials for most of this build even the roof tiles were second hand. With minimal new construction materials used. Our aim is to blend in and harmonise with the village, the jungle and paddy field which surrounds us.

Nature's blueprint

Nature provided the floor plans, blueprints and inspiration. For this wonder to become a reality, we refused to destroy nature to make way for development. Pest trees have been incorporated into the landscape as boardwalks that now help to protect the natural habitats and forest floors. Whilst all other trees have been kept and preserved and even feature in some of the buildings! We have built around nature.. So it was all off the plan, it wasn't always easy - but we got creative and love the outcome.

Community over concrete

The vision may have been ours, but the project has been lovingly created and put together by a team of local craftsmen. As we call Sri Lanka home, we have embraced the colourful, fruitful and ritualistic way of island life. It influences our design choices and steers us away from modern minimalism. We are harmonising with the culture and rich history of this island and have used reclaimed, recycled and natural materials.

Water features & pool

The 7x4m swimming pool is filled with natural underground spring water and kept clean with a light dose of chlorine. It is accompanied by natural lotus ponds which surround the main living areas. Bringing nature closer, providing the native birds with clean drinking and bathing water, a habitat for water loving creatures such as dragonflies and beautiful fish. Providing natural cooling systems and inspiring beauty.

Natural features

We have preserved the forested jungle area by protecting all of the trees during the build. We have an abundance of native trees such as: Kotuumba (almond), mango, jackfruit, coconut, soursop and Donga amongst others. Some with exposed aeriel roots, giving the landscape shape and structure. The forest floor is kept natural and largely undisturbed by a boardwalk which hovers above.

Relaxing & lounging spaces

We have designed the space to feel spacious with plenty of reading nooks, meditation spots and lounges for people to either connect and have deep conversation or escape and get privacy and read a book. As facilitators ourselves, we know how important a selection of spaces is for a happy group dynamic. There are two indoor lounges, one library and numerous outdoor seating areas.

Kitchens

We have a dedicated traditional kitchen with cinnamon wood fired oven and all of the modern ammenities for our retreat chef. There is an additional kitchenette for guests to make tea and refreshments.

Outdoor spaces

We have designed the landscape around the pre-existing nature, with decks under trees, a grassy garden at the front and dedicated re-wiliding areas, flower gardens and rockeries.

Bonus features

+ Galleried library in the tree tops

+ Artisanal shop

+ Ice bath

+ Edible kitchen garden

Design Notes

We wanted our space to be a silent rebellion against the modern minimalist movement which strips away feeling and cleanses history and artistry from the modern architectural landscape, not just in Sri Lanka but all over the world. We want this space to feel inherited, nostalgic and rich with texture, colour and feeling. This retreat space calms the nervous system, honours our natural rhythms and nourishes our earthy souls.
