What to Consider When Choosing Your Yoga Teacher Training Program

When embarking on the journey to become a certified yoga teacher, one of the most pivotal decisions you'll make is choosing the right yoga teacher training program.

With the plethora of options available, ranging from intensive retreats to part-time courses, the task of selecting the ideal program can feel overwhelming.

However, with careful consideration and a clear understanding of your goals, preferences, and requirements, you can ensure that you embark on a training journey that aligns seamlessly with your aspirations.

Here are some key factors to keep in mind when selecting your yoga teacher training program:

1. Accreditation and Certification

Prioritize programs that are accredited by reputable yoga organizations. A certification from a recognized body not only enhances your credibility as a yoga instructor but also ensures that the training meets standardized quality criteria. Look for certifications that are internationally recognized, as this can broaden your teaching opportunities in the future.

Yoga Alliance is an example of a world renound and recognised registry board.

2. Curriculum and Focus

Dive deep into the curriculum and modules of the program to understand the focus areas and teaching styles covered. We think it is best to choose a program which has a holsitic approach and recognises the roots of Yoga and encourages all different ability levels, not just advanced or elite Yoga.

Choose a program that aligns with your interests and teaching goals. Additionally, consider whether the program includes modules on anatomy, philosophy, meditation, and teaching methodology to ensure a comprehensive learning experience.

3. Instructor Expertise

The expertise and experience of the instructors leading the program play a significant role in shaping your learning journey. Research the background of the lead instructors, their teaching styles, and their own yoga practice. It's beneficial to learn from teachers who inspire and challenge you while providing a supportive learning environment.

4. Duration and Intensity

Consider the duration and intensity of the program in relation to your schedule and personal commitments. Whether you opt for an intensive month-long immersion or a longer part-time course, ensure that the program structure suits your lifestyle and allows you to absorb the teachings effectively. Balance the intensity of the training with your capacity for immersion and practice.

5. Location & Setting

The location and setting of the training program can significantly impact your overall experience. Whether you prefer a serene retreat space a bustling urban studio, choose a setting that resonates with your energy and facilitates your learning process. Consider factors such as accommodation, facilities, and the overall ambiance of the training space. If staying onsite, you will want a comfortable bed and place you can rest as a full time training can be demanding! Dorm style rooms, although more affordable may not offer you the space you need to decompress - this is your choice! On the other hand, too luxury and this may indicate something about the focus of the school.

6. Cost and Value

While cost is an essential factor to consider, prioritize the value and quality of the program over pricing alone. Compare the offerings of different programs in relation to their costs, considering factors such as accommodation, meals, study materials, and additional benefits. Investing in a high-quality training program can be a transformative experience with long-term benefits for your teaching career.

7. Student Reviews and Feedback

Research student reviews and testimonials from past participants to gain insights into their experiences with the program. Honest feedback from alumni can provide valuable information about the quality of teaching, the support offered, and the overall impact of the training. Consider reaching out to former students for firsthand accounts of their journey.

In conclusion, choosing the right yoga teacher training program requires thoughtful consideration of various factors that align with your goals and aspirations. By focusing on accreditation, curriculum, instructor expertise, program duration, location, cost, and student feedback, you can make an informed decision that lays a strong foundation for your teaching career. Remember that the training journey is not just about gaining a certification but about immersing yourself in the profound teachings of yoga and evolving both personally and professionally.

7. Group size

This can make or break a training experience. Again, consider what environment you learn best and what you're looking to get out of a training. Smaller groups will allow you to get more 1:1 mentorship, be seen and heard, family feel and a tighter community vibe. A larger group can be beneficial if you don't enjoy being in the spotlight, love to socialise and prefer larger groups so that you can meet more people.

This is very important to consider as a Yoga training is incredibly personal, you will need to ensure that you will have good guidance, the opportunity to ask your questions and receive personal feedback about your progress, especially if you're looking to take this further and teach one day.

It is possible that a group could be too small as well! You want enough people to be able to learn about different perspectives, body types, ability levels and injuries. This is vital in becoming a competant, accessible Yoga teacher.

Common group sizes:

Extremely small group 1-8 (may not get enough variety)

Modest 8-10 (quite a nice size, very intimate)

Optimal size yet cozy 10-14 (intimate but more people to learn from)

Medium/large 15-20 (bordering too large depending on how many trainers are on hand)

Larger group 20-30 (unlikely to get noticed and personal feedback or guidance)

Considerably large 30+ (high likely you wont get time and personal feedback from trainers)

The size of the group might also reflect the school's focus, whether it is on generating revenue or cultivating skilled educators, led by individuals dedicated to community and team growth.

By adhering to these key considerations, you can embark on a yoga teacher training program that not only equips you with the necessary skills but also nurtures your personal growth and deepens your practice.
